Career change

Explore your options before you change.

Wanting a change does not necessarily mean changing occupation. Separate the role, working environment and activity itself so you can choose what to investigate next.

A reflection process to use at your own pace, without a career-change readiness score or automatically recommended occupation.

A woman walks through the city with a notebook under her arm.

Name what is driving the change

Choose three recent situations that made you want to leave. For each, consider whether the difficulty comes from the activity, organisation or employment conditions. Add what you would like to keep. Changing team or context may be an option worth investigating before changing occupation.

Identify transferable experience

Start with a specific achievement. What did you do, with whom and with what result? Translate that experience into a skill: explaining a process, organising an event or analysing an incident. Whether it transfers to a new activity still needs checking in context.

Explore two or three options

For each option, describe the activities that attract you and what you do not yet know. An interest in an industry does not tell you what a role involves each day. Read job advertisements and discuss your interpretation with someone doing the work.

Make transition constraints visible

Record available time, personal commitments, mobility and the income you need. Identify skills or qualifications to acquire. Ask about costs and entry conditions before committing to training. Funding is not secured until your own circumstances have been assessed.

Choose a practical check

A conversation can clarify the pace, difficulties and routes into a role. In France, a formal workplace immersion is another way to examine a career option. France Travail explains the conditions and the agreement with a referring organisation and host. Availability is not automatic. Elsewhere, investigate the local arrangements for authorised workplace observation.

For your own notes

Your career options worksheet

Copy this model for two or three occupations. The example shows a way to investigate; it is not a career recommendation.

QuestionExample: training coordination
What attracts me?Organising sessions and helping participants.
What do I not know? The amount of administration and last-minute problem solving.
Who could I meet?Someone coordinating training in a training organisation.
What is my next action?Request a conversation about a typical week and take notes.
What will I decide afterwards?Investigate further, adjust or discard the option based on the evidence.

Set a feasible action and a review date for each option. Ruling out a possibility can also be progress.
